Nightwish is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Gathering, Ulver, Gary Moore, Sonata Arctica and Tarot. Those roots explain a lot about how Nightwish arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Epica, Within Temptation, Xandria, Delain and After Forever, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into After Forever, Kamelot, Angra, Baracuda and Sonata Arctica, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 62 connections around Nightwish, reaching back through The Gathering and forward to After Forever. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee. The band was formed in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead vocalist Tarja Turunen. The lineup grew with drummer Jukka Nevalainen and bassist Sami Vänskä. In 2001, Vänskä was replaced by Marko Hietala, who also took over the male vocalist role previously filled by Holopainen or guest singers. Nightwish has been successful in Finland since the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First (1997), and were later recognized internationally through the release of their albums Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000) and Century Child (2002).
