Divinyls is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Easybeats, Syndicate of Sound, Wild Ones, INXS and Roxy Music. Those roots explain a lot about how Divinyls arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Cold Chisel, Australian Crawl, Hunters & Collectors, The Angels and Goanna, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Noiseworks, The Dead Daisies, Chrissie Hynde, Cyndi Lauper and Michael Hutchence, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Divinyls, reaching back through The Easybeats and forward to Noiseworks. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Divinyls were an Australian rock band that formed in Sydney in 1980. The band primarily consisted of vocalist Chrissy Amphlett and guitarist Mark McEntee. Originally a five-piece, the band underwent numerous line-up changes, with Amphlett and McEntee remaining as core members, before its dissolution in 1996. Amphlett garnered widespread attention for performing on stage in a school uniform and fishnet stockings, and she often used an illuminated neon tube as a prop for displaying aggression towards both band members and the audience.
