Fine Young Cannibals is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Dirty Mind, Dimitri from Paris, The English Beat, Desmond Dekker & The Aces and Talking Heads. Those roots explain a lot about how Fine Young Cannibals arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as ABC, Thompson Twins, Eurythmics, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Spandau Ballet, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Opposites Attract, Sweeter Than Fiction and What Is Love, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around Fine Young Cannibals, reaching back through Dirty Mind and forward to Opposites Attract.
