El DeBarge is a Gospel act. Their sound grew out of Robbie Nevil, Sam Salter, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat and Andraé Crouch. Those roots explain a lot about how El DeBarge arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as DeBarge, After 7, Patti Austin, Shirley Murdock and Shalamar, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Raheem DeVaughn, Lorenzo and Al B. Sure!, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 37 connections around El DeBarge, reaching back through Robbie Nevil and forward to Raheem DeVaughn.
