DeBarge is a Funk act. Their sound grew out of Charlene, Switch, Atlantic Starr, Richard Camacho and Raydio. Those roots explain a lot about how DeBarge arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Shalamar, El DeBarge, The Whispers, S.O.S. Band and The Gap Band, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rich Boy, Blackstreet, Raheem DeVaughn, Mariah Carey and Ready to Die, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around DeBarge, reaching back through Charlene and forward to Rich Boy. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
