Four Tops is a House and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Tim Hardin, Ike & Tina Turner, France Joli, Tommy Edwards and R. Dean Taylor. Those roots explain a lot about how Four Tops arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Supremes, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, The Spinners and Diana Ross and the Supremes, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Michael Bolton, The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas and The Temptations, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 53 connections around Four Tops, reaching back through Tim Hardin and forward to Michael Bolton.
