Martha and the Vandellas is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Manfred Mann and Aretha Franklin. Those roots explain a lot about how Martha and the Vandellas arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jr. Walker & The All Stars, The Four Tops, The Contours, The Supremes and Martha Reeves And The Vandellas, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Four Tops, The Sweet Inspirations, The Marvelettes, Myra and Smoove & Turrell, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 56 connections around Martha and the Vandellas, reaching back through Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and forward to The Four Tops.
