Grand Funk Railroad is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Soul Brothers Six, Union, Little Eva, Cream and Todd Rundgren. Those roots explain a lot about how Grand Funk Railroad arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as James Gang, Foghat, Ten Years After, Humble Pie and Free, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Cirith Ungol, Spine of God, Valeriy Syutkin, Exciter and Lucifer's Friend, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Grand Funk Railroad, reaching back through Soul Brothers Six and forward to Cirith Ungol. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
