GTR is a Progressive rock act. Their sound grew out of Nightwing, Asia, Geoff Downes, Yes and Genesis. Those roots explain a lot about how GTR arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Tony Banks, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Night Ranger, Genesis and Mike & The Mechanics, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Saxon, Joe Satriani and Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 22 connections around GTR, reaching back through Nightwing and forward to Saxon. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
GTR were an English rock supergroup founded in 1985 by former Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe and former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. Though the band's leaders were known as progressive rock musicians, GTR appealed to AOR radio stations. The band lasted for two years and one album. Hackett subsequently criticized the project, though not necessarily the other musicians involved in it.
