◇ image via WikipediaJames Blake
James Blake is a Dubstep act. Their sound grew out of Jay Rock, Charlotte Day Wilson, Moses Sumney, Forest Swords and Phoria. Those roots explain a lot about how James Blake arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jamie xx, Mount Kimbie, Jamie Woon, Moses Sumney and Burial, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Trim, Jay Rock, Future, Lil Yachty and Vince Staples, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 106 connections around James Blake, reaching back through Jay Rock and forward to Trim. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
James Blake Litherland is an English singer-songwriter and record producer. Known for his emotive, soulful light head voice and use of falsetto, he first gained recognition following the release of three extended plays—The Bells Sketch, CMYK and Klavierwerke—in 2010. He signed with A&M Records to release his self-titled debut album (2011) the following year, which was met with critical praise and peaked within the top ten of the UK Albums Chart.
