Zapp & Roger is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. Those roots explain a lot about how Zapp & Roger arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Zapp, One Way, Roger, Lakeside and The Gap Band, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ice Cube, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 31 connections around Zapp & Roger, reaching back through Bootsy Collins and forward to Ice Cube. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Zapp is an American funk band that emerged from Dayton, Ohio, United States, in 1977. Particularly influential in the electro subgenre of funk, Zapp were known for their trademark use of the talk-box effect. The original line-up consisted of four Troutman brothers—frontman Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry—first cousin, Sherman Fleetwood—and non-Troutman family members Bobby Glover, Gregory Jackson, Jerome Derrickson, Eddie Barber, Jannetta Boyce and Shirley Murdock. Zapp also worked closely with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic during its early stages, their support being a factor in the group gaining a record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1979.
