Les McCann is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Helen Baylor, Eugene McDaniels, Bobby Timmons, Charlie Byrd and Gene McDaniels. Those roots explain a lot about how Les McCann arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Horace Silver, The Crusaders, Jack McDuff, Reuben Wilson and Johnny Hammond, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Gang Starr, Eric B. & Rakim, Mobb Deep, Raekwon and The Five Stairsteps, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 43 connections around Les McCann, reaching back through Helen Baylor and forward to Gang Starr.
