BluesFolkRock

Loudon Wainwright III is a Blues and Folk act. Their catalogue also touches Rock. Their sound grew out of David Mansfield, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kate McGarrigle and Bob Dylan. Those roots explain a lot about how Loudon Wainwright III arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Paul Simon, Roy Harper, Tim Hardin, Fred Neil and Ted Hawkins, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rufus Wainwright, Jill Sobule, Spinal Tap and Martha Wainwright, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 26 connections around Loudon Wainwright III, reaching back through David Mansfield and forward to Rufus Wainwright.
