Rufus Wainwright is a Pop act. Their sound grew out of Freddie Mercury, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, The Roches, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Ticklah. Those roots explain a lot about how Rufus Wainwright arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Andrew Bird, Patrick Wolf, Loudon Wainwright III, Sufjan Stevens and Ben Folds, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Melissa Auf der Maur, Gossip, Sussan Deyhim, Benjamin Clementine and Guillemots, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 55 connections around Rufus Wainwright, reaching back through Freddie Mercury and forward to Melissa Auf der Maur.
