Mark Hollis

Post-rock

Mark Hollis is a Post-rock act. Their sound grew out of Tago Mago, Burt Bacharach, Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Those roots explain a lot about how Mark Hollis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, The For Carnation and Robert Wyatt, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Heligoland, Anja Garbarek and UNKLE, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around Mark Hollis, reaching back through Tago Mago and forward to Heligoland. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Mark David Hollis was an English musician, singer, and songwriter who was the co-founder, lead vocalist, lyricist, and songwriter of the new wave and post-rock band Talk Talk. Hollis achieved commercial success and critical acclaim in the 1980s and 1990s as a member of the band and wrote most of the songs, including hits like "It's My Life" and "Life's What You Make It". Though primarily a vocalist, Hollis became a prolific multi-instrumentalist, as he played guitars and keyboards.
