Miriam Makeba is a Jazz and Rock act. Their catalogue also touches World music. Their sound grew out of Ella Fitzgerald, Hugh Masekela, Jorge Ben, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Duke Ellington. Those roots explain a lot about how Miriam Makeba arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Hugh Masekela, Orchestra Baobab, Amadou & Mariam, Cesária Évora and Manu Dibango, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Serge Gainsbourg, Angelique Kidjo, Hugh Masekela, Freshlyground and Letta Mbulu, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 45 connections around Miriam Makeba, reaching back through Ella Fitzgerald and forward to Serge Gainsbourg.
