Hugh Masekela is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Blue Thumb Records, Orlando Julius, Aterciopelados, Mama Africa and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Those roots explain a lot about how Hugh Masekela arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dominique Fils-Aimé, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Zara McFarlane, Miriam Makeba, The Byrds, Eric Burdon & The Animals and Paul Simon, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around Hugh Masekela, reaching back through Blue Thumb Records and forward to Zara McFarlane.
