One Direction is a Alternative rock and Dance-pop act. Their sound grew out of Say Now, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, We Will Rock You and RedOne. Those roots explain a lot about how One Direction arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Niall Horan, ZAYN, The Vamps, Little Mix and Shawn Mendes, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Nicole Scherzinger, 2NE1, 5 Seconds of Summer, Mitski and Abraham Mateo, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 71 connections around One Direction, reaching back through Say Now and forward to Nicole Scherzinger.
