◇ image via WikipediaMitski
Mitski is a Indie rock and J-pop act. Their catalogue also touches Punk rock. Their sound grew out of Jeff Buckley, Tamino, Speedy Ortiz, Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. Those roots explain a lot about how Mitski arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Susannah Joffe, Black Box Recorder, Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief and Weyes Blood, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Allie X, Lorde, Xiu Xiu, David Byrne and Son Lux, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 56 connections around Mitski, reaching back through Jeff Buckley and forward to Allie X.
