Dance-pop

Shape of You is a Dance-pop act. Their sound grew out of TLC, Rihanna, Rudimental and JAY-Z. Those roots explain a lot about how Shape of You arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Something Just Like This, Shake It Off, Despacito, One Kiss and Castle on the Hill, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Chainsmokers, LeAnn Rimes, Halsey, Post Malone and Luis Fonsi, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 30 connections around Shape of You, reaching back through TLC and forward to The Chainsmokers. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

"Shape of You" is a song by English singer Ed Sheeran. It was released on 6 January 2017 as one of the double lead singles from his third studio album ÷ (2017), along with "Castle on the Hill". The dancehall and R&B infused song was written by Sheeran, Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid. Due to its interpolation of "No Scrubs" by TLC, Kandi Burruss, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, and Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs are also credited as writers. The song was produced by Sheeran and Steve Mac.
