House

Shuggie Otis is a House act. Their sound grew out of Jimi Hendrix, Arthur Lee and Sly Stone. Those roots explain a lot about how Shuggie Otis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Baby Huey, Eddie Hazel, Little Beaver, Isaac Hayes and Bill Withers, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Mac DeMarco, Brothers Johnson, Sam Evian, Andrew Ashong and Yasiin Bey, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Shuggie Otis, reaching back through Jimi Hendrix and forward to Mac DeMarco. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
