The Brothers Johnson is a Funk act. Their sound grew out of The Beatles, Bobby Womack, The Supremes, Billy Preston and Shuggie Otis. Those roots explain a lot about how The Brothers Johnson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Lakeside, Ohio Players, Con Funk Shun, Brick and Rufus, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Michael Jackson, Steve Arrington, Irene Cara, Ray Charles and Graham Central Station, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 49 connections around The Brothers Johnson, reaching back through The Beatles and forward to Michael Jackson.
