Prince is a Alternative rock and Contemporary R&B act. Their catalogue also touches Dance-pop, Funk and House. Their sound grew out of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Little Richard, Joni Mitchell and Rick James. Those roots explain a lot about how Prince arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Prince & The Revolution, Prince and the New Power Generation, The Time, Terence Trent D'Arby and Wendy & Lisa, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Shakira, Lenny Kravitz, Jonas Brothers, The Weeknd and Seal, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 387 connections around Prince, reaching back through Jimi Hendrix and forward to Shakira. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
