Smog is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Joanna Newsom, Kath Bloom, Jim O'Rourke, Clouds Taste Metallic and Judee Sill. Those roots explain a lot about how Smog arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bill Callahan, Palace Music, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Songs: Ohia and Vic Chesnutt, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Kurt Vile, Joanna Newsom, Squid, Will Oldham and Domino Recording Company, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Smog, reaching back through Joanna Newsom and forward to Kurt Vile. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
