Cat Power is a Indie rock and Rap act. Their sound grew out of Dan the Automator, Sandy Denny, Mark E. Smith, M. Ward and Steve Shelley. Those roots explain a lot about how Cat Power arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sharon Van Etten, Liz Phair, PJ Harvey, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Aldous Harding, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bat for Lashes, Kristian Matsson, Snail Mail, Cassius and K.Flay, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 70 connections around Cat Power, reaching back through Dan the Automator and forward to Bat for Lashes.
