◇ image via WikipediaTake 6
Take 6 is a Gospel act. Their sound grew out of George Duke, Andraé Crouch, CeCe Winans, All Night Long (All Night) and The Persuasions. Those roots explain a lot about how Take 6 arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jacob Collier, Bebe & Cece Winans, Bobby McFerrin, Sounds Of Blackness and Sarah Vaughan, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into 98 Degrees, Jacob Collier, Screamadelica, Brian McKnight and Ray Charles, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 47 connections around Take 6, reaching back through George Duke and forward to 98 Degrees.
