Quincy Jones is a Bossa nova and Funk act. Their catalogue also touches House, Jazz and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Duke Ellington, Kvitka Cisyk, Luiz Bonfá, Take 6 and Dimitri from Paris. Those roots explain a lot about how Quincy Jones arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as George Benson, Brothers Johnson, The Crusaders, Patrice Rushen and Patti Austin, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Johnny Pate, Melle Mel, Arif Mardin, Mel and Kim and Nikki Yanofsky, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 115 connections around Quincy Jones, reaching back through Duke Ellington and forward to Johnny Pate. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
