Whitney Houston

Gospel
GospelHousePop

Whitney Houston is a Gospel and House act. Their catalogue also touches Pop and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Richard Smallwood, The S.O.S. Band, Gene Page, K-Klass and Kevin Aviance. Those roots explain a lot about how Whitney Houston arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Toni Braxton, Céline Dion, Dionne Warwick, Destiny's Child and Mary J. Blige, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Sam Smith, Leona Lewis, There's Got to Be a Way, Jolin Tsai and Miho Fukuhara, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 264 connections around Whitney Houston, reaching back through Richard Smallwood and forward to Sam Smith. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
