The John Butler Trio

The John Butler Trio is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Jimi Hendrix and Little Hurricane. Those roots explain a lot about how The John Butler Trio arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Beautiful Girls, Powderfinger, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Grinspoon, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Newton Faulkner, John Mayer and Dave Matthews Band, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 27 connections around The John Butler Trio, reaching back through Jimi Hendrix and forward to Newton Faulkner. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The John Butler Trio were an Australian roots rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. They formed in Fremantle in 1998 with Jason McGann on drums, Gavin Shoesmith on bass and Butler on vocals. By 2009, the trio consisted of Butler with Byron Luiters on bass and Nicky Bomba on drums and percussion, the latter being replaced by Grant Gerathy in 2013. After both Luiters and Gerathy exited the trio in early 2019, bassist OJ Newcomb and drummer Terepai Richmond joined the band, accompanied by touring musician Elana Stone on keyboards, percussion and backing vocals.
