Awkwafina is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Raveena, Tom Waits, Chet Baker and Mickey Avalon. Those roots explain a lot about how Awkwafina arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Princess Nokia, Tierra Whack, Young M.A, The Coup and DreamDoll, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dumbfoundead, SZA and Sabrina Claudio, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Awkwafina, reaching back through Raveena and forward to Dumbfoundead. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
