The Coup is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Blue Scholars, Das Racist, Crass, dead prez and Rage Against the Machine. Those roots explain a lot about how The Coup arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as dead prez, Brother Ali, Paris, Xatar and Blackalicious, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Gabriel Teodros, Common Market, dead prez, Jel and Janelle Monáe, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 43 connections around The Coup, reaching back through Blue Scholars and forward to Gabriel Teodros. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
