Big Mama Thornton

Blues
Blues

Big Mama Thornton is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Memphis Minnie, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Peacock Records, Bessie Smith and Jimmy McCracklin. Those roots explain a lot about how Big Mama Thornton arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Koko Taylor, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Slim Harpo and Albert King, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into ZZ Ward, Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits, Candye Kane, Taj Mahal and George Smith, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 37 connections around Big Mama Thornton, reaching back through Memphis Minnie and forward to ZZ Ward. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
