Deerhoof is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Busdriver, Karen O, Joanna Newsom and Igor Stravinsky. Those roots explain a lot about how Deerhoof arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Fiery Furnaces, OOIOO, Melt-Banana, Deerhunter and Animal Collective, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jeff Tweedy, Busdriver, Shugo Tokumaru, Xiu Xiu and Autolux, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 36 connections around Deerhoof, reaching back through Godspeed You! Black Emperor and forward to Jeff Tweedy. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
