Flea is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Dizzy Gillespie, Hillel Slovak, Defunkt and Ziggy Marley. Those roots explain a lot about how Flea arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Nubiyan Twist, Gnarls Barkley, Soft Machine, Puscifer and Adrian Quesada, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into John Frusciante, Greg Kurstin, The Linda Lindas, Dirty Loops and Atoms for Peace, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around Flea, reaching back through Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and forward to John Frusciante.
