KMD is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of MF DOOM, 3rd Bass and Brand Nubian. Those roots explain a lot about how KMD arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as MF Grimm, MF DOOM, Viktor Vaughn, Monsta Island Czars and NehruvianDOOM, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into MF Grimm, Aesop Rock, MF DOOM and Jay Electronica, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 44 connections around KMD, reaching back through MF DOOM and forward to MF Grimm. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
KMD was an American hip hop trio active from 1988 to 1994, during the golden age. The core of the group was composed of brothers Zev Love X and DJ Subroc. The group's original third member, Jade 1, left before the group signed with Elektra Records, being replaced with Onyx the Birthstone Kid. The group dissolved in 1994 following the sudden death of DJ Subroc in 1993, the departure of Onyx and conflicts with Elektra that resulted in them being dropped from the label.
