Grand Puba is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of C.L. Smooth, Check It Out, Chubb Rock, Sadat X and Bobbi Humphrey. Those roots explain a lot about how Grand Puba arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Brand Nubian, Jeru the Damaja, Large Professor, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and Pete Rock, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Melle Mel, Positive K, Diamond D, Mary J. Blige and Handsome Boy Modeling School, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 56 connections around Grand Puba, reaching back through C.L. Smooth and forward to Melle Mel. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
