Larry Carlton

Blues
Blues

Larry Carlton is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Lee Ritenour, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery and B.B. King. Those roots explain a lot about how Larry Carlton arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Lee Ritenour, The Crusaders, Dave Grusin, George Benson and Nathan East, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around Larry Carlton, reaching back through Lee Ritenour and forward to Steely Dan.
