◇ image via WikipediaSteely Dan
Steely Dan is a Jazz and Rhythm and blues act. Their catalogue also touches Rock. Their sound grew out of The Soul Survivors, Phil Woods, Larry Carlton, Timothy B. Schmit and Ricky Lawson. Those roots explain a lot about how Steely Dan arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, America, Seals & Crofts and Crosby, Stills & Nash, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Mike and the Mechanics, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Michael McDonald, Joe Sample and Nik Kershaw, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 88 connections around Steely Dan, reaching back through The Soul Survivors and forward to Mike and the Mechanics.
