◇ image via WikipediaThe Shirelles
The Shirelles is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Valerie Simpson, Carole King, Dionne Warwick, Jessie Hill and Perry Como. Those roots explain a lot about how The Shirelles arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Chiffons, The Drifters, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Bobby Vee and Betty Everett, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Manhattans, The Marvelettes, Gloria Scott, Smith and Manfred Mann, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 66 connections around The Shirelles, reaching back through Valerie Simpson and forward to The Manhattans.
