Matchbox Twenty is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Letters to Cleo, Collective Soul, Mutemath, American Hi-Fi and Eddie Vedder. Those roots explain a lot about how Matchbox Twenty arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Gin Blossoms, Hootie & The Blowfish, Vertical Horizon, Tonic and Five for Fighting, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Maroon 5, 3 Doors Down, Tracy Bonham, RMR and Carlos Santana, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 48 connections around Matchbox Twenty, reaching back through Letters to Cleo and forward to Maroon 5.
