◇ image via WikipediaMelvins
Melvins is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Leif Garrett, dälek, Castle Rat, Jimi Hendrix and Danny Carey. Those roots explain a lot about how Melvins arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sleep, Kyuss, Mudhoney, Acid Bath and Crowbar, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Tool, Alice in Chains, Fantômas, Soundgarden and Eyehategod, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 48 connections around Melvins, reaching back through Leif Garrett and forward to Tool.
