Gang of Four is a Punk rock act. Their sound grew out of Ladytron, Big Country, Elly Jackson, The Seahorses and Morningwood. Those roots explain a lot about how Gang of Four arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Au Pairs, Mission of Burma, Public Image Ltd., The Pop Group and Josef K, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Skindred, Manic Street Preachers, The Futureheads, Kele Okereke and The Faint, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 65 connections around Gang of Four, reaching back through Ladytron and forward to Skindred.
