Mongo Santamaria
Mongo Santamaria is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Pérez Prado, Herbie Hancock and Donald Byrd. Those roots explain a lot about how Mongo Santamaria arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ray Barretto, Fania All Stars, Ibrahim Ferrer, Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound and Joe Bataan, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Willie Bobo, Paul Horn, Oscar Brown Jr., Afel Bocoum and Tito Puente, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 25 connections around Mongo Santamaria, reaching back through Pérez Prado and forward to Willie Bobo. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. His biggest hit was his rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. From the 1970s, he recorded mainly salsa and Latin jazz, before retiring in the late 1990s.
