Ibrahim Ferrer is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Afro-Cuban All Stars, Manuel Guajiro Mirabal, Cheikh Lô and Buena Vista Social Club. Those roots explain a lot about how Ibrahim Ferrer arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Rubén González, Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, Buena Vista Social Club and Eliades Ochoa, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Omara Portuondo, Gorillaz, Coldplay, U2 and Sting, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Ibrahim Ferrer, reaching back through Afro-Cuban All Stars and forward to Omara Portuondo. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
