Tito Puente is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Oscar Hernández, Machito, Cachao, Beny Moré and Mongo Santamaria. Those roots explain a lot about how Tito Puente arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Fania All Stars, Pérez Prado and Ibrahim Ferrer, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Cachao, Oscar Hernández, Bob Telson, Lisa M and Joe Cuba, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around Tito Puente, reaching back through Oscar Hernández and forward to Cachao. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
