Penguin Prison

Penguin Prison is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Alicia Keys and Backstreet Boys. Those roots explain a lot about how Penguin Prison arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Miami Horror, Atlas Genius, Capital Cities, Panama and Electric Guest, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Sade, Lionel Richie, Jamiroquai, Faithless and Goldfrapp, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Penguin Prison, reaching back through Johnny Cash and forward to Sade. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Penguin Prison is an electropop project composed solely of New York City singer, musician, producer and remixer Chris Glover. His stage name comes from a freestyle rap he created with his friend about George W. Bush when they started saying "He's a penguin vision, he went to the penguin prison, and assumed a penguin position". Penguin Prison is known a solo act, but his original songs are often created with the help of other musicians. He has a band for live shows and tours consisting of Andrew Pertes, David Gross, Ben Grubin, and formerly Ernesto Karolys.
