Raye is a Contemporary R&B act. Their sound grew out of Nina Simone, Wet Wet Wet, Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill and Aretha Franklin. Those roots explain a lot about how Raye arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Absolutely, Zara Larsson, Olivia Dean, FLO and Sienna Spiro, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix and Absolutely, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 85 connections around Raye, reaching back through Nina Simone and forward to Beyoncé. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
