◇ image via WikipediaNat King Cole
Nat King Cole is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Billy Strange, The Williams Brothers, Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines and Fats Waller. Those roots explain a lot about how Nat King Cole arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Nat King Cole Trio, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee and Bobby Darin, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Marvin Gaye, Dave Grusin, Gregory Porter, Paul Horn and Aretha Franklin, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 91 connections around Nat King Cole, reaching back through Billy Strange and forward to Marvin Gaye.
