Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Django Reinhardt, Al Bowlly, Turlough O'Carolan, Kate McGarrigle and Danny Thompson. Those roots explain a lot about how Richard Thompson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Roy Harper, Van Morrison and Loudon Wainwright III, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rufus Wainwright, Maria McKee, Still Corners, Bob Mould and Curtis Stigers, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Richard Thompson, reaching back through Django Reinhardt and forward to Rufus Wainwright.
