Rico Rodriguez is a Ska act. Their sound grew out of Count Ossie, Burning Spear, Ansel Collins, Oh Carolina and Don Drummond. Those roots explain a lot about how Rico Rodriguez arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Prince Buster, Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, Derrick Morgan, Tommy McCook and Ijahman Levi, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Specials, Paul Young, The Foundations, Jerry Dammers and Linton Kwesi Johnson, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 34 connections around Rico Rodriguez, reaching back through Count Ossie and forward to The Specials. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
